Are Christians Suppose to Forgive and Forget or Just Forgive?

May 3, 2026    Mark Cress

Forgiveness is a biblical command, but the phrase 'forgive and forget' isn't actually found in Scripture. True forgiveness means intentionally releasing resentment and the desire for revenge, but it doesn't require erasing memories or removing consequences. Forgiveness is different from trust, reconciliation, and amnesia. Biblical boundaries are healthy and necessary, even after forgiveness. You can forgive someone while still maintaining wise relational distance. The goal isn't to pretend hurt never happened, but to refuse to let past wounds control your future.
